Exploring Patterns during Math Enrichment

Math The third grade students at Antheil had a chance to explore the Fibonacci Sequence during Math Enrichment with Mrs. Hartigan. The discussion started with a discussion about what students noticed and wondered when looking at the beginning of the sequence- 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34. The ideas and questions the students shared demonstrated the strengths of our elementary mathematics curriculum in fostering mathematical thinkers! Some students were able to identify the sequence and what the next numbers would be. While this activity started with mental math, it was evident that it was time to apply some addition strategies. In keeping with “going green”, the students used dry erase markers on their desks (which they cleaned when they were done), to solve the problem and identify numbers in the sequence. It was a great math class that integrated so many important mathematical concepts and demonstrated how math occurs in nature and the world around us!
