Mrs. Beachem's Virtual 5th Grade Class Winter STEM Project: STUDENTS CREATED SNOW!

 Snow Globe

Mrs. Beachem porch dropped winter STEM kits for her virtual fifth graders.  The students used the supplies to make it "snow" in Google Meet!  They learned about density (see fact information below) and then saw it in action to create a cross between a snow globe and a lava lamp.

Density is a measurement that compares the amount of matter an object has to its volume. An object with much matter in a certain volume has high density. An object with little matter in the same amount of volume has a low density. Density is found by dividing the mass of an object by its volume.

formula

where ρ is the density, m is the mass, and V is the volume.

Tub In our experiment the paint is more dense than water.  We used bubbles from the Alka-Seltzer tablets to drag that dense paint up to the oil surface.  Once the paint bubbles reached the oil they popped.  This caused the paint to sink down through the water---and tada!  We now have a cross between a lava-lamp and a snow globe!  :)
