EHS Senior Spotlight May 2022: Meet Yeshem Imam

Immediate Release

May 1, 2022

Yeshem ImamWhat would you like people to know about Ewing High School?

I would like people to know that Ewing High School is a very diverse and accepting community where people from all walks of life work and study and support each other.  It is a place where everyone feels comfortable and accepted.

What has been your favorite class to date and why would you encourage another student to take that class?

Although I truly appreciate all of my classes which I hold near and dear to my heart, my favorite class to date that I look back upon fondly was my first ever class at Ewing High, which was Journalism taught by Ms. Masterson. I encourage it because it gave me the chance to explore and express myself in writing and also gave me the opportunity to work with others in a very fun fashion.

What is Ewing High School’s best-kept secret?

Ewing High School’s best-kept secret is that the school chose to have a clock tower to be built rather than a pool, and it has represented us and is a symbol for not just Ewing High School, but all schools in the district.

What is an extracurricular activity at Ewing High School students should not skip?

An extracurricular activity at Ewing High School that students should not skip would be the Art Club which will allow students to stretch their creative wings as well as give them some volunteer work.

In which activities do you participate in school?

I enjoy attending the Anime Club on Fridays whenever it is open after school. We all share the love of anime, especially shows such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

What activities do you participate in outside of school?

I go to the gym nearby the school, Urge Fitness, and also work at Marrazzo’s Market over the weekend. This keeps me busy and adds experience to public dealing. During the summer of 2021, I attended the National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. which was hosted on the campus of American University. I gained experience in the medical field by performing mock surgeries, attending lectures, and going on field trips. I also made many friends from different backgrounds.

What awards or acknowledgments have you received in school and/or outside of school?

In school, I have been awarded Student of the Month for January of 2022, and a few certificates like achievements and presidential. Outside of school, I was awarded a certificate from the National Student Leadership Conference. For my college, I have earned a Presidential Scholarship and the Lion’s Pride Scholarship which is a merit-based scholarship.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

The accomplishment that I am the proudest of is getting accepted into The College of New Jersey, where I will major in Biology.

What is your favorite memory of high school to date?

My favorite memory of high school to date would simply be hanging out with my friends in the Anime Club after school as we would watch cool shows, play our favorite games, hang out, and eat snacks.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

I have a deep respect for all of my teachers at Ewing High School and value all that they have taught me as they have made me wiser and given me a deeper respect for my education, but my favorite teacher would have to be Ms. Masterson. She has helped me out in many ways, whether it would be advice, preparing for a test, or just sharing a joke with the class and me.  It is one of the reasons why I have read some of my favorite books.

Who or what has impacted your life in a positive way?

The thing that has impacted my life in the most positive way would be getting a job as it has taught me the importance of hard work and also has let me explore how I work best and how to work with people.

How do you define success?

I define success as a state in which a person is living comfortably and happily and is satisfied with who they are and their place in the world. It is when a person has achieved whatever personal goals they may have and can enjoy their lives with their family, friends, and community.

What are your plans after you graduate from Ewing High School?

I plan to attend The College of New Jersey as I have been accepted there with the Presidential and Lions’ Pride scholarship, a merit-based scholarship, and I will major in Biology. After that I plan to attend medical school and eventually become a doctor.

What is your favorite quote or book?

My favorite quote is, “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering.” To my knowledge, this quote was made by German philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche and was used by rapper DMX, real name Earl Simmons. Even though I may disagree with some of Nietzsche’s beliefs, I think that suffering is a part of human life, and since all humans are animals with the ability to reason, we can find meaning in our natural instinct of survival, giving us value in our lives and allowing us to grow as people, form bonds, and accomplish amazing achievements.
