Over 160 K in Scholarships Bestowed at Ewing High School Senior Awards Night

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 18, 2020

Each spring, one of the best nights of the year is the annual Ewing High School Senior Awards Night, when scholarships and honors are bestowed upon the graduating class members.

Sadly, this year’s event was lost to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it does not diminish or take away from the impressive accomplishments of the Class of 2020.

The district released a Virtual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday night, highlighting the many achievements and honors bestowed upon the seniors, and releasing the recipients of awards and scholarships.  It can be found on the Ewing Schools YouTube Channel.

At the virtual event, over $160,000 in scholarship funds and grants were awarded to members of the EHS Class of 2020.

During the event, Ewing High School Departmental Honors were also announced with recognized students being presented awards from faculty members.

Georgia Institute of Technology-bound Nicholas Vellegna was named EHS Class of 2020 Valedictorian, and Dasha Eisenhaur headed to The College of New Jersey, was recognized as Salutatorian.

“I would like to thank the civic and community organizations as well as the businesses and individuals that step forward and provide scholarships and awards for our exceptional students,” commented Superintendent Michael Nitti.  “Their belief in our mission and support of our schools will help these outstanding young people continue their fine academic work after they move on upon graduation.”

Release: Sheridan Receives Marks-Lake Memorial Scholarship

The presentation of the annual Debbie Marks-Lake Memorial Award/Scholarship is always a highlight of Ewing High School’s Senior Awards Night.  This year the award was presented to outstanding EHS scholar-athlete Jentle Sheridan.

Debbie Marks-Lake was a three-sport student-athlete for Ewing High School excelling in soccer, basketball and softball. Known for her athletic prowess, Marks-Lake earned numerous awards in high school, highlighted by her selection as a first team All-State player in soccer, The Trentonian "Player of the Year" for soccer, and many other athletic and scholastic achievements.

One of the finest student-athletes every produced by the Ewing Schools, Marks-Lake sadly passed away in October of 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

The Debbie Mark-Lake Award/Scholarship, sponsored by her family and the Debbie Marks Lake Foundation/Debbie’s Dreams, is awarded to a Ewing High School female student-athlete who demonstrates the same qualities as Debbie with regard to academic achievement, scholarship and leadership.

Sheridan is an accomplished Ewing High School student-athlete.  She is a decorated two-sport athlete who has a legacy of achievement in each sport.  In the winter, she was a stellar performer during another strong season for Girls Basketball, earning All-Conference honors.  In the spring, she has been a standout on the diamond and a key member of our softball program.  In the classroom, she carries a 4.08 GPA and is in the top of her class as well as a member of National Honor Society and a Peer Leader.  She plans to continue her academic career at Gettysburg College.

Other highlights included the presentation of the John F. Gusz Memorial Scholarship to Lawrence Boadi, the award of the Wayne Staub Presidential Scholarship to Nicholas Vellenga, The Vincent J. Sciarrotta Community Service Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Emma Hanlin and the bestowing of the Lloyd Snyder Memorial Award to talented EHS musician Nicholas Vellenga.

A touching moment each year is when the Joshua Scott Memorial Award is presented to an EHS 9th grade student.  Joshua Scott was in 9th grade in the Ewing Schools when he sadly passed away.  The award recipient is a freshman student who best embodies the positive traits of Joshua.  This year’s honoree was Sarah Ilesanmi.

Continuing with accolades for the senior class, several Ewing High School seniors will be continuing their education at The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township and were recognized for their outstanding accomplishments at Ewing High School.  Darby Delmonte was awarded The College of New Jersey EOF Promise Award, this award is for all expenses paid for the first two years of attendance, worth $60,000, Munira Arkuwollie received an $8,000 a year Chairman of the Board Merit Scholarship for her hard work.  Melanie Dondzila, Dasha Eisenhauer, Edgar Oyola and Isabella Pschar will join their classmates at TCNJ, and were each awarded $5,000 Merit-Scholarships each year to continue their studies of higher education.

Traditionally, to close the ceremony, the “key to Ewing High School” is passed from the current 2019-20 Student Council Co-Presidents Anujin Ariunbold and Nathalia Davila to the incoming Student Council leadership.

This year it was a symbolic passing of the torch to incoming Class of 2021 Student Council President, Elisa Davila and the Student Council Co-Vice Presidents, Destiny Dollson and Gabrielle Gregg.
