Ewing Schools Welcome New School Security Coordinator

Mr. Jay Shaler

On January 14th, the Ewing Schools will welcome John “Jay” Shaler as the newest School Security Coordinator in the district.

The position of School Security Coordinator was first implemented by the Board in 2013.  Mr. Shaler will be the fifth School Security Coordinator for the Ewing Schools.  These staff members work with the administrative team to help make the schools safe and positive learning environments for the students, and serve as adaptive experts on school security protocol and crisis management.  Mr. Shaler’s hiring now gives the district a SSC for each school, and the funding for the position was part of the district’s use of increased state aid, something that was successfully lobbied for by the Board and administration.  Mr. Shaler will be based at Antheil Elementary School.

Mr. Shaler was a member of the Ewing Township Police Department from 1997-2018, spending his last fourteen years as a detective.  During his time with the Ewing Township Police, Mr. Shaler received many accolades and awards, including being recognized as American Legion Officer of the Year in 2001.  A former Marine, Mr. Shaler is a graduate of Ewing High School and both of his children are graduates of the school system.

“We were very impressed with Mr. Shaler’s candidacy and experience,” Ewing Superintendent Michael Nitti commented.  “We think he will be an excellent addition to our team, and establish a positive and harmonious relationship with the Antheil School community.”
