The Ewing Township Public Schools Transportation

The Ewing Township Public Schools Transportation Department is responsible for all student transportation requirements in support of The Ewing Township Public Schools district. The department mission is to safely transport our 4100 students to/from locations for interscholastic trips & events, athletics, and extracurricular activities via district vehicles and private bus companies.

Transportation is provided for students living more than two (2.0) miles for grades K-8. The distance becomes two and one half (2.5) miles for grades 9-12. The distances for which districts transport students are not set by the district, but rather are designated by New Jersey Administrative Code NJAC 6A:27-1.3 and NJ Statute, NJSA 18A:39-1. The Ewing Police Department provides crossing guards at critical walking areas. Additionally, students whose route to school is deemed hazardous by the Board and/or municipal government are entitled to transportation. In addition, any student classified with special needs who either meets these distance requirements or for whom transportation is required in the student’s Individual Education Plan must be transported.

Bus Schedules & Changes

Bus schedule information for the current school session is always available in Genesis/Stopfinder. Please print your student’s schedule, two weeks prior to school year, for reference. Stop times can vary due to road conditions. Please allow for a five to ten minute difference from the scheduled times shown and/or utilize the Stopfinder app for real time updates. Call 609-538-9800 ext. 7110 to check for an update if the wait is 15 minutes past the scheduled time.

**Please understand that we utilize a computerized transportation program and errors do occur. Students in the same house are sometimes plotted at erroneous stops. Please notify the transportation department, and we will notify bus companies/drivers of the correction.

When a bus has to wait for a parent or make another attempt at dropping off a student, it makes the students on that bus, as well as the connecting routes, late getting home. Additionally, if the student must be returned to school, there may not be certificated staff to watch your child. If a parent cannot be reached, the student may remain on the bus for additional runs to ensure their safety, before attempting to deliver again. We try to avoid this at all costs. Please make sure your contact information is correct in Genesis so that we can reach you.

Students in grades preschool through 2, or has an IEP, must have a parent present at the bus stop. Grades 3-12 are allowed off the bus without a parent; please do not ask the driver to not release your student unless you are there. A sub-driver will not know you have this arrangement with your normal driver.  Please teach your child how to get home in case this occurs.

Any requests for bus and/or stop changes must be for safety reasons and changes will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as received. It is important to note that any bus stop change involves a review of the safety issues as well as the needs of all students on the bus route. All requests due to a change of address must be submitted to Central Registration; no exceptions can be made. For logistical reasons, there are times when student(s) may be assigned to a new bus, and the adjustment(s) will be communicated effectively. Please allow a minimum of three school days to process approved changes. *Drivers are not permitted to make changes to bus routes or stops without prior approval from Transportation.

**Alternate transportation assignments do not carry over from year to year. Students are entitled to one seat, on one bus, morning and afternoon. This applies to joint custody situations as well. If you wish to transport your student, please notify transportation@ewingboe.org so Genesis/Stopfinder can be updated. If/when you wish to resume transportation, notify transportation@ewingboe.org, with three days’ notice, and we will reinstate the student’s schedule.

NOTE:  Please place all requests in writing. No phone calls will be accepted. All requests will be reviewed and a decision will be made within one week.

Bus Conduct

Safe, respectful conduct is expected of all passengers to ensure safety. Below are the expectations:

1.    Be on time at the designated bus stop. The bus must keep to schedules to ensure the safety of other students. Students should be at the bus stop 5-8 minutes prior to their scheduled time.

2.    A bus needs 200-300 feet to activate its lights correctly. There must be this distance between all bus stops.

3.    Every additional stop adds 3-4 minutes to a route. Our routes are tight with time and capacity. The buses do not have time to stop at every student's home.

4.    State law requires a student to be assigned "one" bus to and from their residence. Daycare is a courtesy and will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

5.    Students may only ride the bus to which they are assigned. Accountability is a major issue with transportation. We need to know what students are on every bus in case there should be an accident or emergency.

6.    Children who disregard the bus regulations will receive a Misconduct Report on Bus, issued by the driver. Continued disregard of regulations will lead to disciplinary action and quite possibly suspension from riding the bus. Should a child be suspended from bus privileges, his/her parents will have to find other means of transportation to and from school.

7.    If there is an emergency, you must contact your child's school for written approval to ride an alternate bus.

8.    There is no law on sidewalks. Students must walk to their cluster stops with or without sidewalks.

9.    A school bus is an extension of the school, but a school bus stop is not. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor their child at their bus stop.

10. Being the only student at a bus stop does not qualify for a house stop. As stated above, there must be 200-300 feet in between stops, time restrictions, and safety issues which take precedence. "Cluster stops" must be maintained for students who are assigned a stop but do not normally ride, students who switch schools, or move into the area, etc.

11. We are compassionate about parent work schedules and will work with you in providing a stop that meets all requirements, but we cannot change a stop due to parental time restrictions.

12. Courtesy stops are against regulations. All stops must be approved through the transportation department. Please do not place your driver in a position where they could be disciplined.

13. Bus stops are subject to change at any time due to time restrictions and locations.

Stay in your seat, with hands to yourself.

Always respect others, the bus, and yourself.

Follow the directions of your bus driver all the time.

Eating and drinking are not allowed on the bus.

Talk quietly: Please do not shout; No hurtful words.

Your safety is our #1 concern; you are responsible for your actions.

Emergency School Closings

Weather conditions or the loss of utility services (heat, water or electric) can mean a delayed opening, the closing of schools or an early dismissal.  The decision to delay or close the schools is made as early as possible.  A message will be posted on the district phone system (609) 538-9800, the website, Channels 19/31, and a School Messenger message will sent.

90 Minute Delayed Opening

Should there be a delayed opening, all students are to report to school 1 hour and 30 minutes later than normal.  Do not drop your child off at school at the usual time as there may not be sufficient staff for supervision.

If your child will take the bus to school on a DELAYED OPENING, the bus will arrive at the bus stop 1 hour and 30 minutes after the normal scheduled pick-up time.  (Please remember to be at your bus stop 10 minutes before the scheduled bus pick-up time.)

Delayed Opening times for schools:

O'Brien Academy 9:05AM

Ewing High School 9:15AM

Fisher Middle School 9:55AM

Antheil, Lore and Parkway Elementary Schools 10:30AM
