Students Entering Grades 1 and 2- Summer Reading 2024
- The school district will be sending home Take-Home Packs for students entering grades 1 and 2 next year. Each pack includes a variety of books and a Passport To Reading. The Passport can be used as the summer reading log for the students.
- The books chosen by students in grades 1 and 2 can be read independently or can be read with someone else. The goal is to read...read...read, so reading together counts! You can even read books in another language!
- Also, for students entering grades 1 and 2, websites such as Storyline Online (www.storylineonline.net) and Raz-Kids "count" as reading.
- The books you choose to read can be from those you have at home (but have never read before), books that you purchase, or from Mackin, or books borrowed from the Mercer County Public Library.
Students Entering Grades 3, 4 and 5 - Summer Reading 2024
- Students choose their own books. Whenever possible, the book should be one that he/she can read independently. To make sure the book is “just right”, open it to a page in the middle and begin reading. If he/she makes too many mistakes (2 or 3 mistakes for shorter books, 3 or 4 mistakes for longer books), he/she needs to select a different book. That many errors may make it difficult to understand the book.
- The book must be one the student has never read before.
- The book can be one you have at home (but haven’t ever read before), one that you purchase, one from Mackin or one borrowed from the Mercer County Public Library.

Students choose their own book(s), but they cannot choose books they’ve already read.
-
The self-selected book(s) must be read independently. To make sure the book is “just right,” open it to a page in the middle and begin reading. If you don’t know or misunderstand 3-4 words on one page, you need to select a different book; that many errors may make it difficult to comprehend.
-
The book can be one you have at home (but haven’t ever read before), one that you purchase, or you access from Mackin, or one borrowed from the Ewing Township Public Library on Scotch Road.
