Staff Spotlight:  Meet Mr. David Hauserman

What is your position with the Ewing Public Schools and what are your responsibilities?

I am District Supervisor for Special Education, grades 6 through 12. I am also the onsite administrator at The O’Brien Academy. My responsibilities include supervising and supporting special education teachers, paraprofessionals and nurses.  Providing teachers with the resources they need in their classrooms and assisting in academic and behavioral programming is a major part of my position. I also work with grants and coordinate services with non-public schools.

When you started your career in the field of education what made you want to become a Special Education Teacher?

I have always wanted to make a difference in students’ lives. My first job in the field was working as a counselor in an afterschool program for at risk youth. After that experience I focused on becoming a special education teacher.

What college or university did you attend and why did you choose that establishment of higher-education? 

I have an undergraduate degree from West Chester University. I received my Masters in Special Education from Johns Hopkins University and my Educational Administration Masters from Rider University. Each of these schools provided excellent opportunities for learning the skills needed to work with students and teachers.

What do you think is the most important aspect of your position? 

Supporting students is the most important aspect of my position. We have the best students in Ewing who bring so much to table. It is an honor to work with our outstanding teachers to support these kids.

Our District is a leader in regards to our popular Project Unify Physical Education Class, Project Unify sport teams and clubs, how did this come to fruition?

Susan Colacello from Special Olympics New Jersey proposed the program to us in 2013. We started out small with an after school Unify Club at Ewing High School. We have now expanded from that small start to having Unify Clubs at Ewing High and Fisher Middle School, a Unified Physical Education Class at Ewing High, multiple sports teams and monthly Unify experiences at each of the elementary schools.

Our District also has many student-athletes that participate in Special Olympics; can you share some of the highlights of our teams and coaching staff? 

One of the biggest highlights of the year was our Special Olympics Unified Basketball team from Ewing High School winning the inaugural State Championship at The RAC at Rutgers. The team was coached by Katlin Doolan, Barb Dennis-Garcia and Matt Lynch. They were amazing as our athletes and partners worked their way to the top of the podium.

What do you like best about Ewing?

The students and the people of Ewing are awesome. 

What do you think is the most important aspect of teaching?

Number one is making positive connections with the students. Knowing who they are as people and demonstrating that you care. Once you have that you will have more success in teaching.

What do you do outside of school?

I spend time with my wife and four children doing family activities.

Who or what has impacted your life in a positive way?

My family has impacted my life positively.

How do you define success?

Having teachers and students achieve the goals that they have set for themselves.

What is the one thing people do not know about you that you would like to share?

I enjoy listening to educational and history podcasts in my down time.

What is your favorite quote or book?

“Fair Isn’t Always Equal.” This quote is from the book of the same name written by Rick Wormeli. The main idea is that assessment and differentiation in the classroom must be tailored to individual student needs.
