For Second Consecutive Year, Ewing Schools Named to the College Board’s Honor Roll for Significant Gains in Student Achievement

 

Only 433 School Districts across the U.S. and Canada Are Honored

 

The Ewing Public Schools is one of only 433 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Perhaps most significant is that this is the second consecutive year the Ewing Schools have received this honor, a rare occurrence.   

 

“It is certainly an honor to be named to the honor roll once,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Danita Ishibashi stated. “To receive the recognition twice, in consecutive years, is certainly a unique and significant accomplishment and testament to the excellent work of our educators.”

 

Achieving this recognition indicates that a district is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for the opportunity of rigorous study. To be included on the 7th Annual Honor Roll, The Ewing Public Schools had to increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the number of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.

 

“As part of our administrative vision, we set a goal to expand our AP offerings and get more students involved,” Dr. Ishibashi remarked. “Again, this award is acknowledgement that we are reaching those goals.”

 

The Ewing Public Schools is one of only forty New Jersey school districts to receive this prestigious recognition.

 

According to the Ewing Schools’ Director of Counseling and Assessment Betty Jo Prince, the first step to delivering the opportunity of AP to students is providing access by ensuring courses are available, that gatekeeping stops, and that the doors are equitably opened so these students can participate. “The administration of the Ewing Schools is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds,” Mrs. Prince remarked.

 

“Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators of the Ewing Schools who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction. “These teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge.”  

 

“We look at this honor as affirmation that the variety of initiatives and strategies we are implementing to determine how to simultaneously expand access and improve student performance in rigorous academic pursuits is working,” Ewing High School Principal Dr. Rodney Logan commented.  “I thank and commend our administrative, counseling and instructional staff for their work in this important area.”
